Dun Laoghaire was officially renamed Kingstown in 1821 in honour of a visit by the British King George IV. The town name though reverted to its ancient Irish name, by resolution of the town council in 1921. The obelisk monument was erected to mark the occasion of the visit of King George IV when visiting Dunleary in 1821. The first foundation stone of the Harbour was laid in 1817 by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland - Lord Whitworth.
The visit of the King was recorded on the obelisk, which is now positioned in front of the Royal St. George Yacht Club on Queens Road.
