Victoria Fountain Monument
The Victoria monument was erected to commemorate the disembarking of Queen Victoria in Dun Laoghaire in 1900. Such royal visits were very rare occasions. During Queen Victorias' 63 year reign, Queen Victoria only visited Ireland 4 times.
This small decorative fountain was vandalised in 1982 and completely restored in 2002.
The fountain was one of a large number celebrating Queen Victoria erected in Ireland and throughout Britain and other British colonies to a standardised design by Glasgow manufacturers Walter McFarland & Co.. Built in cast iron and ordered from the pattern books of Walter Macfarlane's Saracen Foundry in 1893. The McFarland & Co. company has since ceased trading, but much of its business was inherited by another Scottish firm, Heritage Engineering Ltd., Glasgow, who were responsible for the structure's repair and restoration in 2002.
