Dun Laoghaire is named after the fort of Irish High King Laoghaire who reigned in the fifth century. During Laoghaire's reign St. Patrick arrived in Ireland and Laoghaire permitted him to spread Christianity throughout Ireland.
Laoghaire's fort is believed to have been located near what is now Crofton Road. The remains of the fort were destroyed when first a Martello Tower was built on the site in the early 19th century and then the railway was constructed. In 1999 the plaque shown here was unveiled.
