Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company announces
94% increase in profits for 2002

Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company, the commercial State body responsible for Dún Laoghaire Harbour has announced a 94% increase in profits for the financial year ended 31st December 2002.

Total profits before tax rose to €2.47 million compared to €1.27 million in 2001.

Overall turnover in 2002 was €9.47 million, an increase of 8% on the €8.75 million turnover in 2001. The main contributor to the increased turnover is the 37% rise in income from non ferry activities. This income includes higher revenues from Dún Laoghaire Marina, parking fees and, for the first time, license fee income from the development of the Company's Harbour Yard site.

Shipping turnover rose by 3% in 2002. Dún Laoghaire is Ireland's premier passenger ferry port and 1.015 million passengers travelled through the Harbour in 2002.

The Company continues to focus on the development of it surplus land assets. Planning permission was granted earlier this week for the development of the Harbour Yard site at Crofton Road, Dún Laoghaire and the Harbour Company recently announced a tender/competition for a major redevelopment of the historic Carlisle Pier in the heart of the Harbour.

Commenting on the results, the Harbour Company Chairman, Paddy McMahon said:

"2002 has been another excellent year for Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company. The Company has grown its revenue from all its major activities and despite considerable costs pressures has continued to improve its operating profit margins.
The Company faces major challenges in the years ahead, particularly in the upkeep and ongoing maintenance of our beautiful, historic Harbour and its buildings. Recent conservation analysis conducted by the Company suggests that this will cost at least €12 million in the coming years and will have to be funded from the Company's own resources. The Company is also committed to the resurfacing of the East pier at a cost of approximately €3.0 million".

Chief Executive, Michael Hanahoe added:

"Since its establishment in 1997, the Harbour Company has grown its turnover by 8.5% per annum and its operating profits by 12% per annum compound. Non shipping revenue grew by 38% per annum during the same period.

I am optimistic that further strong revenue and operating profit growth will be achieved in the current year. For the future we will continue to focus on the development of our ferry terminal business, working with Stena Line to ensure that we offer the best possible facilities for their customers in Dún Laoghaire. We will also continue to focus on the continued growth of non shipping revenues.

The Supreme Court decision this week that port companies are not liable for local authority rates for the period from 1999 to 2002 inclusive will have a significant positive effect on the Company's profits for 2003. 2.4 million had been provided for the years since 1999 as a contingency against an unfavourable court ruling. Most of this provision will be released into the Profit & Loss Account this year as a consequence of the Supreme Court ruling.

Victorian Fountain at Dún Laoghaire Harbour

'Press Release' - 29 January 2003 -

The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company is pleased to announce that erection work on the restored Victorian Fountain has started today, Wednesday 29th January 2003. The work is expected to be completed within eight (8) days.

The fountain is being restored at its original location at the entrance to Dún Laoghaire Harbour near the Ferry Terminal. The restored fountain incorporates many of its original features including the fountain itself, the mosaic and granite base and two exquisite cast iron lamp standards, which formed part of the setting for the fountain.

Commenting on the restoration, Michael Hanahoe, Chief Executive of the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company said, "We have put a lot of work into ensuring that the monument is exactly as it would have been when first placed here over a hundred years ago. The colour scheme chosen, we believe faithfully represents the original colour scheme. Where features of the fountain no longer exist they have been replicated using the original manufacturers drawings".

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council granted planning permission for the restoration in 2001 and the project has been grant aided by the Heritage Council as a project of historical and architectural importance.

The drinking fountain and the lamp standards are extremely fine examples of 19th century architectural ironwork and form part of a highly significant collection of Victorian ironwork in the Dún Laoghaire area. In his definitive book of the urban heritage of Dún Laoghaire, the author and architectural historian, Peter Pearson, described the fountain as, "a magnificent and beautiful monument" and is an outstanding example of high quality decorative ironwork, which was such a distinguishing feature of the Victorian era.

Erected in 1901 the fountain was one of the best-known landmarks in the town and its restoration is being carried out as part of the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company's commitments to protect the Harbour's heritage. The restoration of the fountain will complete the renewal of an important focal point at the entrance to the harbour and will improve the connection between town and harbour that is the shared objective of the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company and the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

Construction of Dún Laoghaire Harbour began in 1817 and is widely recognised as one of the finest artificial harbours in the world. The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company is the statutory body charged with the managing, control, operation and development of the Harbour. Profits from its commercial activities are used to fund the maintenance and preservation of the Harbour.

RESTORATION OF THE VICTORIA FOUNTAIN AT DÚN LAOGHAIRE HARBOUR

'Press Release'

Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company has applied to Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for planning permission to repair and reinstate the Victoria Fountain at its original site in the Harbour area.

The Victoria Fountain described by architectural historian Peter Pearson in his book 'Kingstown' as: "a beautiful monument, a defenseless symbol of the bygone age" was erected to commemorate Queen Victoria's visit to Dún Laoghaire in 1900.

The company which manufactured the Fountain, Walter McFarland & Co. Ltd., Glasgow, has since ceased trading. However, original drawings have been traced to another Scottish firm, Industrial Heritage Company, which has now been commissioned by Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company to repair and restore the monument.

The cost of the restoration project will be fully funded by Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company and will be met from revenues from 'Pay and Display' parking in the Harbour. Subject to the necessary planning approvals being obtained, Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company is targeting Spring 2002 for the completion of the restoration work.

Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company is being assisted in this project by architects
Shaffrey & Associates and Consulting Engineers, John Moylan & Associates.

PRESS RELEASE DÚN LAOGHAIRE HARBOUR SPONSORS LOCAL SAILING

Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company recently announced a diverse sponsorship package for sailing in Dún Laoghaire Harbour. The 470 Dinghy Olympic hopefuls Gerard Owens (Royal St George Yacht Club) and Ross Killian (National Yacht Club) received support from Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company to start them on their four year Olympic campaign. The sponsorship will continue throughout the programme but has already started them on a firm footing at a main event in Germany. The Port will also be the venue for the 470 European Championships, hosted by the Royal St George Yacht Club in July. The Irish Youth Sailing Club, based at the Marine Activity Centre West Pier, and managed by Mr Kyron O'Gorman has also received a four-year sponsorship package. Initially this was to help the Club become affiliated to the Irish Sailing Association. The Irish Sailing Association has just confirmed that Kyron has now achieved the necessary criteria and the Club has become a Recognised Teaching Establishment under the National Scheme. The non-profit Club caters for youngsters from all walks of life and gives the opportunities to many that could not otherwise afford "to mess about in boats".
