COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR RECREATIONAL INITIATIVE

The Minister for the Defence and the Marine, MrSean Barrett TD and Minister of State at the Department of the Marine, Mr. Eamon Gilmore TD have launched the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Recreationaj Development Initiative, which is aimed at putting Dún Laoghaire Harbour Board's proposed recreational and amenity plans on exhibition. The Minister said that a particularly interest- ing and challenging feature was the opportunities for
business interests to establish leisure related commercial operations.

"This approach is in line with the criteria set down in the agreed Harbour Development Plan published in 1992" , said Mr Barrett.

Mr Barrett said that the exhibition will display marina possibilities and address how its installation can be advanced and that he expected significant support for the initiative from the Dún Laoghaire Combined Clubs.
The Minister for the Defence and the Marine also addressed the issue of the development of the Carlisle Pier upon its

decommissioning from ferry operations and said that the proposals to be put on display will be seen to be complimentary to the future of the Carlisle Pier.

Dún Laoghaire should benefit from the potential of long-term sustainable jobs in its efforts to develop the recreational and amenity activities in Dún Laoghaire Harbour, said Minister of State for the Marine, Mr Eamonn Gilmore TD.
"Within the harbours recreational and amenity development proposals, particularly for the recreational potential of the West Pier and Gut Areas, there are proposals to develop a small boat centre to address the needs of people on low and moderate incomes whereby they
may learn to sail, practice marine safety procedures, buy boats and enjoy other-
marine/ water related entertainment" said Mr Gilmore.

"The attraction of such accessibility for everyone to enjoy the harbour, as planned for in the Harbour Development Plan published in 1992, would attract much needed tourism interest and revenue, adding considerably to the further down the line employment prospects throughout Dún Laoghaire's growing tourism sector" , he said.

The east coast of Ireland is in need of a major international sailing centre targeting Irish, UK and European
sailing interests to be attracted to Ireland, and
Board's Recreational Development Proposals can address.

"The planned leisure developments will complement the recreational retail and entertainment outlets in Dún Laoghaire Town Centre" said Mr Lynch. Mr Lynch conveyed his congratulations to the Board's Harbour Recreation Sub-Committee, chaired by Seamus 0' Scollain, for their work over the past number of years.

"They have already conducted wide con- sultation with harbour users groups, the Dún Laoghaire Combined Clubs, and harbour commercial interests. This consultation process has helped us all arrive at this ~dvanced stage, and the process will continue over the coming months to ensure everyone interested voices their views, concerns and opinions", said the Chairman.
