Coastwatch Ireland INTERREG Harbour Report 2001

Ms. Karin Dubsky, Coastwatch Ireland, named Dún Laoghaire Harbour as joint winner of the Coastwatch Clean Seas Survey 2001, in a ceremony at the Grand Canal Basin in July, 2001.

Dún Laoghaire Harbour, in the survey, was the outright winner of the "Cleanliness" section; joint winner of both the "General Management" and "Water Quality" sections; and in the top half of the remaining sections "Waste Management Facilities" and "Information for Users".

"Coastwatch Ireland" carried out the survey at 36 locations and harbours around the coast, stretching from Drogheda to Tramore; the project being funded through the EC INTERREG II programme for Ireland and Wales.

"SPACEHOG"

Dún Laoghaire Harbour has recently installed a "Spacehog" system at three of the disabled parking spaces adjacent to the Ferry Terminal. This is an electronic system to warn motorists that they have parked in a disabled parking space. When a car parks in one of the disabled spaces a recorded message announces that the parking space is reserved for vehicles displaying a disabled permit and that unauthorized persons may be clamped.

"Spacehog" supplied by AGK Ltd., uses a sensor in each parking space which is activated when a car parks in that space. A radio signal then starts the recorded message.
