East Pier resurfacing under way

Work began last month on a three year phased project to resurface the complete length at both levels of the East Pier. The Pier is 1300 metres long and was built between 1817 and 1823. Phase One, which will involve resurfacing the entire lower level of the Pier, will take about twenty six weeks and will cost approximately 3 million Euro. This is the most walked and widest section of the Pier. This phase will also include the wharf built on the Pier in 1827 beside the bandstand to accommodate the Admiralty Mail Packet, and the wider Berth No 1, which was built for ferries in the middle of the last century. The resurfaced pier will be laid out in bays, the surface of which will consist of a mix of concrete and seashell. The boundaries of each bay will be marked out by horizontal strips of Irish granite. The lower level of the Pier will be closed while the work is under way. To accommodate the contractor 's equipment, some public parking spaces in the vicinity of the National Yacht Club will be temporarily unavailable but additional parking space will continue to be available all winter on the Carlisle Pier.
