Dún Laoghaire Harbour to feature on new British Admiralty chart

Last year a major dredging operation took place in the Harbour and afterwards soundings of the Harbour from our post-dredging survey were forwarded to the British Admiralty. These soundings, along with those from Dublin and the recent survey in Dublin Bay, are being incorporated into a new edition of Admiralty Chart No. 1447, "Dublin and Dún Laoghaire".

This will be one of the first charts of the Irish Coast to be published so as to be directly compatible to the WGS84 Datum - This will result in GPS positions (obtained from a satellite system) being able to be directly applied to the chart, unlike currently where a slight southward and eastward adjustment has to be applied to the received position.

Details of altered, post marina, particulars of the Harbour and recent coloured photographs have also been

forwarded to the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office for inclusion in the Admiralty's current revision of the 15th Edition (Year 2000) of the "Irish Coast Pilot".
This new information will be of great benefit to visiting sailors who may be using the marina for the first time, notwithstanding the fact that the current edition of Chart No. 1447 already depicts the harbour's marina and its breakwaters.

Established in 1795, the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is the world's premier supplier of paper charts and publications, with a folio of over 3300 charts and 220 publications. The mission of the UKHO is to meet British national, defence and commercial customers' needs for navigational charts and other hydrographic information, in support of safe navigation. A Last Look at the Carlisle Pier

New Board member

As the process of redeveloping the Carlisle Pier is under way, leading Irish and international artists have been invited to make new work for an exhibition planned on the Pier for September 2004.

The Pier was once the main entrance and exit point into and out of Ireland and holds much meaning for many. As a site of travel, commerce, mail and economic migration it is as much a symbol of melancholy as of opportunity and freedom. The Harbour has associations with James Joyce, Samuel

Beckett and Gugliemo Marconi who made the world's first sports broadcast from here. As such it is a rich context.

At this important transitional time in the Harbour's history, the exhibition will afford the public an opportunity to visit the building one last time.

The project has the backing of the Arts Council, the Harbour Company and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. It is an ambitious project and it will be necessary to raise the finances to support artists in realising their ideas. Financial sponsorship from companies and individuals is currently being sought. For further details contact Cliodhna Shaffrey (curator of exhibition) at cshaffrey@shaffrey.ie, or telephone: 01-8725602.
