Dún Laoghaire Harbour Logo for latest NewsletterTurnover and profit rise in 2003

The Harbour Company had an excellent financial year last year and recently announced a 10% increase in turnover and a 102% increase in pre-tax profits for the financial year ended 31st December 2003.

Revenue Expenditure

Ferry terminal revenue accounted for € 7.95 million of the Company's turnover of € 10.39 million for the year. However, revenue from this source only grew by 2.8% in 2003 reflecting increased competition from other ports and low cost airlines. The main driver of revenue growth was a 42% increase in turnover from other Harbour activities including marine leisure, parking and property management.

Profit before tax increased by 102% to € 4.99 million. However this figure included an exceptional write back of € 2.3 million following a ruling by the Supreme Court in 2003 that port companies were not liable for the payment of local authority rates for the years 1999 to 2002 inclusive. When adjustment is made for exceptional items in both 2002 and 2003 underlying profit before tax grew by 20%. Commenting on the results the Harbour Company Chairman Mr.Paddy McMahon said: "2003 has been another excellent year for the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company. The Company has continue to grow the turnover of all of its non ferry related activities in line with its long term objective of lessening its dependence on its ferry terminal operations and has also, despite considerable cost pressures, improved its operating profit margins".

East PierEast Pier litter free

The Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) league table of litter was published recently and showed that Dún Laoghaire was ranked 11th of 30 towns and cities surveyed. The survey, conducted by An Taisce, was particularly complimentary about the cleanliness of the East Pier and finding it clean to European norms said: "This continued to be an excellent facility being much enjoyed by families, fisher people and tourists. Musicians playing at the end of the pier certainly added to the overall ambience. Clearly this is a much loved, appreciated and cared for facility. The life belts were in very good condition and some of the railings on the steps between the upper and lower piers were being repaired. These had been surrounded by fencing and could so easily become litter traps and yet still managed to be completely litter free".
