Dún Laoghaire Harbour Regatta Championship

Ready for the Regatta

Entries are rolling in for the Dún Laoghaire Regatta the biggest sailing event of the year which is based in the Harbour from July 7th to the 10th and is part sponsored by the Harbour Company. At least 1100 sailors on up to 500 boats are expected to take part.

Dublin Bay will be awash with colour as dinghy and one design fleets race alongside some of the biggest and most impressive one off race boats in Ireland. Six different race areas spread from Sutton to Salthill and the Burford Bank to Scotsmans Bay will ensure variety for the sailors and great views around the Bay for spectators.

The cruiser classes should see some of the hottest racing in recent years with a very impressive armada of Corby designed race boats making the trip from Cork including the Corby 41.5 Mariners Cove.ie, ex Barlo Plastics, and the famous Mustang Sally updated by its owner for 2005. Chris Bonar's successful BH36 Bateleur 97 will be making the trip from Royal Torbay to face up against a strong home contingent including Colm Barrington's Ker 39 Flying Glove, and last years Round Ireland race winner Voodoo Chile.

A large number of the 1720's will be racing under the new club rig, an initiative established this year to refocus the class on its intended target sailor. One of the prettiest fleets racing will be the Howth 17's. All the active 17's are intending to travel across the bay, some of which are over 100 years old, and one of the oldest one design fleets in the world.

When the resurfacing of the lower level of the Pier is completed, a new interactive analemmatic sundial will be located at Berth No 1. The sundial, which will be cast in bronze and set in the pier surface, has been designed by Owen Deignan, Curator of the Baily Lighthouse Museum in Howth.

United Nations of the East Pier!

Workers from 6 countries represented

Thirty workers from six countries - Ireland, Germany, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland and Romania have been employed by Mowlem in recent months on the resurfacing work on the East Pier. Pictured are: Ioan Popescu - Romania, Pavol Kosnac-Slovakia, George Green-Ireland, Anthony Gannon-Ireland, Ioan Taranu- Romania and Alex Socolov-Lithuania. The workers say they enjoy living in Ireland and working on our historic Pier. Some of the men
have families with them in Ireland and others have left loved ones at home. Ioan Taranu was a restaurant manager in his home town of Piatra Neamt in Northeastern Romania but now lives here with his wife and baby. Alex
Socolov used to work in a fridge factory in Kaunas, Lithuania before coming to Ireland. Aidan Joyce, of Mowlem says that the Pier workers have shown tremendous skill and dedication in their work on the Pier, some of
which was done in particularly difficult weather earlier in the year.
