It is not that life ashore is distasteful to me. But life at sea is better.
Sir Francis Drake
In September the Norwegian Royal Yacht was an unusual but very welcome visitor to the Harbour. His Majesty King Harald V and Queen Sonja were on a State visit to Ireland. The "Norge" berthed at the East Pier on the afternoon of Sunday 17th September in front of a large crowd. It departed on the morning of Monday 18th, receiving a 21 gun salute as it passed the East Pier Battery on its journey into Dublin. The Norwegian royal yacht is one of the last held by European monarchs. It was originally built for Sir Thomas Sopwith in 1937 and was commissioned in 1947 as a regal vessel.

The Harbour Company's calendar has always been a collector's item of unusual photographs of the Harbour. The theme of the 2007 calendar is "the working Harbour" and features monthly pictures observing people at work in and around the busy harbour. It's a perfect Christmas present for someone close to, or far away from Dun Laoghaire. It is available for €16 (incl. p&p) through the website at: www.dlharbour.ie/content/resources/
How many people will walk the East Pier on Christmas Day?
Thanks to our people counter technology the Harbour Company can count the number of people who walk along the East Pier. Widely believed to be "the most walked walk in Ireland", Christmas Day is one of the busiest days of the year on the Pier, weather permitting. We are organising a competition to find the person who makes the closest guess at the correct number of people who walk the East Pier between 12 noon and 3 pm on Christmas Day this year. Simply send your guess in the subject line of an email to info@dlharbour.ie before 24th December. The person with the closest figure to the recorded total will receive a Stena Line car plus four passengers voucher for a round trip from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead.
