Work on resurfacing the upper level of the East Pier is nearing completion and the upper level from the ramp to the Battery was re-opened before the June bank holiday weekend. It is expected that both levels of the Pier will be fully open by the end of July. When this work has been completed the restored bandstand and shelter will be reinstated shortly afterwards.
Some of the original granite paving dating from the first half of the nineteenth century which was exposed on the upper level while work was under way will be preserved in situ.
The Harbour Company is one of the first ports in Ireland to be awarded ISO 14001 certification - the international standard for environmental management systems. The standard guides organisations to minimise how their operations affect the environment and comply with applicable laws and regulations.
Preparation and application for accreditation involved a major co-operative effort between all the stakeholders in the Harbour and the certificate awarded covers the Dun Laoghaire marina, the four yacht clubs based in the Harbour, Stena Line, Dublin Tourism, the Purple Ocean restaurant, Cafe Ritazza, gift shop, International Marine Services, Boyd Boats as well as the Harbour Company's marine / port operations and associated services at its own offces and the ferry terminal building.
The benefits of the accreditation will be an improved perception and commitment to key environmental issues by the Company's staff and those in other companies and organisations operating in the Harbour. As custodians of the historic Harbour which approaches the 200th anniversary of its construction in coming years, certification also reflects the pride Harbour Company staff take in their working environment in and around the Harbour.
Commenting on the certification, Michael Hanahoe, Chief Executive of the Harbour Company said: "There is a major challenge for the Company and all its stakeholders to address the huge environmental issues which our society faces. The significance of this is further emphasised as we enter a period of rapidly rising costs for fuel, energy and waste disposal."
"We have to maintain and improve our already high environmental performance standards. ISO 14001 will concentrate the minds of all who operate in the Harbour area on the critical issue of how to establish an organised approach to systematically reduce environmental impacts which we can control. ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for establishing an environmental policy, determining the environmental aspects and impacts of our activities and services, planning environmental objectives and measurable targets, implementation and operation of programmes to meet objectives and targets and management review."
"The Harbour Company expects to see major benefits for all our stakeholders in terms of the effciency and use of energy and raw materials coupled with the productions of less waste for disposal."
