Stena Line reduces sailings
In November, Stena Line reduced its sailings between the Harbour and Holyhead from two crossings a day to one. The schedule will revert to two sailings per day for the Christmas and New Year period. Stena Line's Route Director, Vic Goodwin, said the reduction was due to high fuel prices and the economic downturn. Passenger numbers on the Dun Laoghaire-Holyhead route fell by 11% in the first nine months of 2008 compared to 2007. He said that while the HSS Stena Explorer is extremely popular with customers, operating costs remain very high.
The Harbour Company is actively negotiating with Stena Line about getting a long-term commitment to operate in Dun Laoghaire beyond the current contract which runs to 2011. Chief Executive, Michael Hanahoe, has said the Harbour Company wants to work with Stena Line to make the route profitable for both parties.
