On Wednesday 1 July 2009 the restoration project carried out by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council on the East Pier Bandstand was completed and the Bandstand handed over to Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company to look after for posterity.
New Metals Walkway - DLRCC
Historically Dun Laoghaire Town Centre has been severed from its seafront by the railway cutting of the Dart Line particularly between Park Road and the junction of Marine Road and Crofton Road. This has created a barrier for pedestrians walking between the seafront and the town.
Summer Exhibition - DLRCC
An exhibition of contemporary painting and sculpture by fifty leading Irish and international artists, including Rowan Gillespie, John Bellany RA, Elizabeth Blackadder RA, William Crozier HRHA, Patrick O'Reilly, Patrick Scott HRHA, Comhghall Casey and Peter Collis RHA.

Spring Edition 2008
New Harbour Company Chief Executive
Gerry Dunne has been appointed Chief Executive of Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company, succeeding Michael Hanahoe who retires this month after 11 years at the helm.
Vast armada on the way to 2009 Regatta
Over 550 boats from France, Spain, Scotland, Wales, England and the Isle of Man will converge on Dun Laoghaire next July for the start of Ireland's largest sailing event - the 2009 Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta, supported by the Harbour Company.
Captain Christopher Cassedy
Captain Cassedy was the Harbour Master in Dun Laoghaire from 1933 to 1938. The Company has received a significant amount of information from Captain Cassedy's grandson, Paul Cassedy, which is being put on the Company website.
RNLI report for 2008
The RNLI report for 2008 showed that its station in the Harbour was the busiest in Ireland for the year with 54 launches and 57 people rescued. Overall, Irish lifeboats launched 863 times and rescued 993 people.

Sailing in Dublin - 25 years
The Sailing in Dublin Club (SID) celebrates 25 years in existence this year. The club was founded by sailing enthusiasts in response to the question "where can I sail regularly, improve my sailing skills without the expense of purchasing my own boat?".
HSS back in service
The Stena Line HSS Explorer returned to the Harbour on February 12th after a five week absence for its annual refit.
Engineer Richard Thomas
Richard Thomas was the first engineer on site when construction work on the Harbour began in 1816. He served in that position until his death in 1838 at the age of 48. The Harbour Company.
Departures
Dave Madden and John O'Brien took voluntary redundancy from the Company at the end of 2008.
Winter Edition 2008
Stena Line reduces sailings
In November, Stena Line reduced its sailings between the Harbour and Holyhead from two crossings a day to one. The afternoon sailing will be restored for the Christmas and New Year period. Stena Line's Route Director, Vic Goodwin, said the reduction was due to high fuel prices and the economic downturn.
2009 calendar now on sale
The Harbour Company's calendar has always been a collector's item of unusual photographs of the Harbour. This year is no exception as the calendar features a series of specially commissioned pictures by photographer Bex Shelford on the theme of Harbour structures.
The calendar is a perfect Christmas present for someone close to, or far away from Dun Laoghaire. It is available for €16 (incl. p&p) through the website at www.dlharbour.ie or by calling (01) 2801018 during office hours.
East and West Pier lighthouse alterations
The Commissioners of Irish Lights have given notice (no. 18 of 2008) that an alteration in characters and synchronisation of lights to the lighthouses on the East Pier and West Pier will be made on or about 20th January 2009.
New immigration booths
The Garda National Immigration Bureau has installed state of the art control booths for arriving passengers in the Ferry Terminal.
Proposal to link Harbour to town
Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has put details on display of a proposed development to better integrate the Harbour and seafront area with the town.
Ferry Terminal commended
The Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey found that Dun Laoghaire was "clean to European norms" according to its latest 2008 survey.
Julie Merriman exhibition
The Harbour Company and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, supported by the Arts Council commissioned artist Julie Merriman in 2006 to map changes and developments at the Carlisle Pier in the Harbour.
Kish Bank drilling
An unusual visitor to the Harbour in October was a jack-up barge (suitably named Jackup) fitted with drilling equipment which was drilling test bores on the Kish Bank for a proposed wind farm development.
90th anniversary of RMS Leinster sinking
A ceremony was held at the Harbour on 10th October to mark the 90th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Leinster in 1918.

Harbour Company reports strong financial results for 2007
In a strong set of figures, the Harbour Company reported a 371% rise in profits to €10.4 million during 2007. This figure included a one-off unrealised profit on the sale of land. When this exceptional is excluded, profit before tax rose by 12% to €3.1 million. Turnover rose by 4.2% during the year to €10.7 with shipping turnover down by 2% while other revenues rose by 15%. Operating expenditure increased from €7,010,187 in 2006 to €7,181,776 in 2007 an increase of 2.4%.
Harbour Swim 2008
The annual Harbour Swim took place on Sunday 24th August and as usual the event had a large entry - over 230 starting in what was good weather by this summer's standards.
ISO Award Presentation
The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley TD, visited the Harbour during the summer to present the Chairman, Sean Costello and Chief Executive, Michael Hanahoe, with an ISO 14001 certificate.
Festival of World Cultures
The Festival of World Cultures took place in Dun Laoghaire at the end of August and once again was a great success.
High winds damage shelter
Re-installation of the shelter on the upper level of the East Pier has been temporarily set back by the effect of high winds on the 9th September which damaged the partially re-built structure and will prolong the works.
Summer Edition 2008
East Pier work nears completion
Work on resurfacing the upper level of the East Pier is nearing completion and the upper level from the ramp to the Battery was re-opened before the June bank holiday weekend. It is expected that both levels of the Pier will be fully open by the end of July. When this work has been completed the restored bandstand and shelter will be reinstated shortly afterwards.
Harbour Company receives ISO 14001 certification
The Harbour Company is one of the first ports in Ireland to be awarded ISO 14001 certification - the international standard for environmental management systems. The standard guides organisations to minimise how their operations affect the environment and comply with applicable laws and regulations.
Oireachtas Committee travels through Harbour on visit to UK
A delegation from the Joint Administration Committee of the Houses of the Oireachtas, led by its then Chairman, Barry Andrews TD, (promoted to Minister for Children and Youth Affairs in May) travelled through the Harbour in late April on a visit to the House of Commons in London.
Christopher Lee in the terminal
Veteran actor Christopher Lee was in the ferry terminal building in early June filming Triage - a new movie directed by Oscar-winning film-maker Danis Tanovic.
Lifeboats busy on June holiday weekend
The Dun Laoghaire's RNLI lifeboat station had one of the busiest June bank holiday weekends ever this year with six call-outs
Dublin Bay task force established
The Harbour Company will be represented on a new task force announced last month by John Gormley TD, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
New stamp launched to commemorate RMS Leinster
An Post launched a commemorative stamp in Dun Laoghaire last month to mark the 90th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Leinster
The Johnny Kellys - Senior, Middle and Junior!
While there are many families with a long tradition in Dun Laoghaire Harbour, none has a lineage like the three generations of Johnny Kelly's active in the Harbour today.
Spring Edition 2008
Phase 2 of East Pier resurfacing
The second phase of work to resurface the East Pier began in mid February. It will involve resurfacing the entire upper level of the Pier which is 1300 metres long and was built between 1817 and 1823. The East Pier is generally considered to be Ireland's most walked walk.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of June this year and the upper level of the Pier will be closed while work is underway.
Harbour Lodge renovation
Harbour Company staff have moved back into the Harbour Lodge this month after extensive renovation works were completed on the building as part of the overall redevelopment work on its former surrounding site.
RNLI statistics for 2007
The Dun Laoghaire lifeboats had another busy year in 2007 with 45 launches and 46 people rescued. There are 43 RNLI lifeboat stations in Ireland and Dun Laoghaire was the fourth busiest after Arranmore in Donegal (51 launches), the Aran Islands (47) and Howth (47).
World Laser SB3 Championships launched
The National Yacht Club in the Harbour recently announced details of the first ever world championships for Laser SB3 boats which will be hosted by the Club from the 20th to the 26th of September this year. The Laser SB3 is the world's fastest growing keelboat and the huge fleet of 120 boats will be the largest ever assembled in Irish waters for a single make keelboat event.
Council publishes feasibility study for East Pier to Sandycove Coastal Amenity Project
Consultants engaged by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council have presented the main findings and recommendations in their feasibility study of the East Pier to Sandycove Coastal Amenity Project. The consultants were asked to examine the feasibility of a major world-class environmental/amenity improvement scheme at the site as well as making provision ofr the proposed Sutton to Sandycove (S2S) project.
President opens Commissioners of Irish Lights HQ
President Mary McAleese was a welcome visitor to the Harbour on February 22nd when she officially opened the Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL) new headquarters building in the Harbour at a gathering of 400 guests and CIL staff in the Buoy Hall of the new building on Harbour Road.

Tender for major expansion of marina Facilities
The Harbour Company published a tender on November 23rd to advance its plans to significantly expand marina facilities in the Harbour. The Company has identified the eastern side of the Harbour as the preferred location for a new marina development of up to 1,300 berths.
The Harbour Company has been to the forefront of marina development in Ireland and its decision to advance further expansion of facilities in Dun Laoghaire is driven by the significantly increased demand for marine leisure activities in recent years..

Two Ministers address Irish Ports Association conference
Ministers from North and South addressed the Irish Ports Association (IPA) annual conference hosted by the Harbour Company in the Fitzpatrick Killiney Castle Hotel on September 28th.
Opening the conference, Sean Costello, Chairman of the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company said that the further commercial development of ports in the North of the island would be good for the ports sector generally. Competition is the lifeblood of trade, he said, and competitive pressures are essential for the efficient working of the economy, wealth generation and customer satisfaction.

Major new "state of the Harbour" report published
The Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council,
Cllr Denis O'Callaghan and historical author Peter Pearson
launched a major new publication by the Harbour Company
on July 11th - a detailed and illustrated inventory of all the
structures, buildings and elements in the 190 year old Harbour.
New board appointed
A new board of Directors of the Harbour Company was appointed by the Minister for Transport and the Marine, Mr Noel Dempsey TD in June 2007.
Irish Ports Association Conference
Dun Laoghaire will play host to the annual conference of the Irish Ports Association on Friday 28th September 2007.
Summer Edition 2007
Phase two of East Pier resurfacing begins
Exploratory work for phase two of the resurfacing of the East Pier began on June 18th. This work will involve the digging of a series of trenches on the upper level of the Pier and its partial closure in three stages over a four week period.
Bandstand and shelter
At the same time as the resurfacing preparatory work, contractors working for Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council will temporarily remove the bandstand and shelter on the East Pier for refurbishment and restoration.
Regatta draws thousands to Dun Laoghaire
With up to 500 boats, some 3,000 sailors, 100 race management personnel afloat and a further 170 administrative volunteers ashore, the four-day Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta starting on July 12th

In September the Norwegian Royal Yacht was an unusual but very welcome visitor to the Harbour. His Majesty King Harald V and Queen Sonja were on a State visit to Ireland.

John de Courcy Ireland

The Chairman, Board and staff of the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company were deeply saddened by the death on April 4th this year of Dr John de Courcy Ireland and extend our deepest sympathy to his children and family.

Revenue x-ray scanner
An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, TD, last month officially launched Revenue's new Customs x-ray container scanner in Dublin Port. It is suitable for scanning containers, trailers, and vehicles including cars, vans and coaches. It will be deployed at all of Ireland's car ferry and container ports including Dún Laoghaire.

Plaque erected in memory of RMS Leinster victims
A ceremony in the Harbour recently marked the 87th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Leinster on October 10th 1918. A plaque was erected near the ship’s anchor which is already on display on Queen’s Road.

Inaugural Regatta a great success! (September 2005)
The Dún Laoghaire Regatta Championship was launched last month at the Allianz Direct Boat Show 2005 in the RDS. The event has already been dubbed "Dún Laoghaire Week" and will see the Harbour's four yacht clubs replace their individual club regatta dates this summer in favour of a combined regatta series. The Harbour Company is very pleased to support the event.

8,000 people visit Carlisle Pier Exhibition 2004 (March 2004)
The Harbour Company's exhibition of proposals to redevelop the derelict Carlisle Pier drew huge crowds to the Ferry Terminal building between January 30th and February 8th.

In July of 2003, the Harbour Company announced a tender competition to redevelop the Carlisle Pier. Following an initial evaluation process, four proposals were short-listed from fourteen proposals originally received.
Images of the four proposed developments of the Carlisle Pier can be view in the March 2004 newsletter. Much more detailed plans, information and models were on display at the exhibition which ran from January 30th 2004 to February 8th 2004 in the Ferry Terminal Building.
Harbour Company profits for 2002 up 94% (September 2003)
The Harbour Company recently announced a 94% increase in profits for
the financial year ended 31st December 2002. Total profits before tax
rose to €2.47 million compared to €1.27 million in 2001.
Overall turnover in 2002 was €9.47 million, an increase of 8% on the €8.75
million turnover in 2001. The main contributor to the increased turnover
is the 37% rise in income from non-ferry activities. This income includes
higher revenues from Dún Laoghaire Marina, parking fees and, for the first
time, license fee income from the development of the Company's Harbour
Yard site.

HSS to arrive in Dún Laoghaire in March (Vol 1.1 1996)
Stena line's new HSS catamaran fast ferry - the first of its kind in the world - is completing its sea trials in the British Channel and the Irish Sea. Ms Helen Gallivan, Stena Line Business Development Manager, says that the HSS is due to ente( into commercial operation on the Dún Laoghaire - Holyhead route by the end of March.
