The second phase of work to resurface the East Pier will begin on Monday 11th February. It will involve resurfacing the upper level of the Pier which is 1300 metres long and was built between 1817 and 1823.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of June this year and the upper level of the Pier will be closed while work is underway. The lower level will remain open to the public with temporarily reduced width. It is intended to re-open the upper level on a phased basis as work is completed.
The project will cost approximately €2.3 million and will be funded entirely from the Harbour Company's commercial activities. The lower level of the Pier was resurfaced in 2005 at a cost of approximately €3 million.
The resurfaced upper level of the Pier will be laid out in bays, with a surface mix of concrete and seashell. The boundaries of each bay will be marked out by horizontal strips of Irish granite.
To accommodate the contractor's equipment, public parking spaces in the vicinity of the National Yacht Club will be temporarily unavailable.
When the resurfacing is complete, the historic bandstand and shelter will be reinstated on the East Pier. Both structures were temporarily removed last year for restoration by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council which is responsible for their maintenance. When reinstated, the Harbour Company has agreed to accept responsibility for their future upkeep.
The Harbour Company apologises for any temporary inconvenience caused. Further information will be made available at: www.dlharbour.ie.
