Lamentable Intelligence from the Admiralty:
The Sinking of the HMS Vanguard in 1875

Book Cover - Lamentable Intelligence from the Admiralty: The Sinking of the HMS Vanguard in 1875

Synopsis

This book details the sinking of the HMS Vanguard outside of Dun Laoghaire port in 1875.

HMS Vanguard sank in thick fog in Dublin Bay in September 1875, Rammed by her sister ship. No lives were lost (except perhaps that of the Captain’s dog), but this one event provides valuable insight into the naval history of the late nineteenth century. Chris Thomas examines what happened, setting it in the context of naval life, the social and economic situation of officers and ratings. He describes the furore caused by the unjust verdict of the Court Martial, vividly illustrating the joys and trials of the seagoing life in the Victorian era. Central to the story is the tragic effect on the life of Captain Richard Dawkins and his family.

With a forward by Professor Andrew Lambert and illustrated by contemporary sketches and modern photographs this book makes an important addition to our knowledge of naval history. It will also be of interest to divers who venture to explore a unique wreck.

Chris Thomas has studied family history for many years, and was drawn to this story on finding that two of his wife’s great-grandfathers were aboard Vanguard on that day. This is his first book.
